The digital era we live in has led to a lack of attention and concentration to observing our surroundings. Our attention often goes directly to our smartphones. The busy, chaotic society we live in makes it even more important for us to be able to experience peace and relaxation. This experience can be achieved by just looking around us. How can I ensure that we will just pause for an instant and observe our surroundings? And what if observing can lead to a feeling of relaxation?
“Shadow Sculptures” is a project made of shapes poured into pexiglas, and is in its completeness when touched by natural sunlight. The fact that natural light isn’t always there makes it intriguing, because it’s uncertain when the “Shadow Sculptures” will show themselves. To me, shadows are magical and give a sense of relaxation. The beauty and unpredictability of shadows is what I want to emphasize with these sculptures.
The sculptures consist of two shapes which are inspired by basic shapes: the square and the circle. These mathematical shapes represent certainty, logic and perfection. The harmony and aesthetic between the shapes result in a feeling of relaxation and completeness for the spectator.
